The National Sports Commission (NSC) expresses profound grief over the passing of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper and 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champion, Peter Rufai, affectionately known as Dodo Mayana, who died at the age of 61.

Peter Rufai was more than a national icon—he was a global ambassador of Nigerian football. His fearless performances between the posts, unmatched charisma, and unwavering dedication to the green and white jersey earned him the admiration of fans both at home and abroad.

Chairman of the NSC, Mallam Shehu Dikko, paid tribute to the late sportsman:

“This is a deeply painful loss. Peter Rufai was not just a national hero; he was a rare soul whose humility, strength, and passion inspired us all. His legacy lives on between the sticks and far beyond. Dodo Mayana gave us memories we will cherish forever. Nigeria mourns, but heaven welcomes a legend.”

Honourable Bukola Olopade, Director General of the NSC, also shared heartfelt words:

“Peter Rufai was a symbol of excellence and leadership in Nigerian sports. His commitment to the game, both on and off the field, was second to none. As we mourn this painful loss, we also celebrate a life that gave so much to Nigerian football. Rest well, legend—you will remain forever in our hearts.”

A pillar of Nigeria’s golden football era, Rufai was instrumental in the country’s historic AFCON 1994 victory and represented the Super Eagles at the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cups, helping the team reach the Round of 16 on both occasions.

At the club level, his illustrious career took him across Europe, where he played for top-tier teams in Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain—most notably Deportivo de La Coruña and Hércules CF.

Beyond the pitch, Rufai dedicated his post-retirement years to mentoring young football talents, remaining a guiding light in the sports community and an enduring symbol of dedication and hope.

The NSC extends its heartfelt condolences to the Rufai family, the Nigerian football community, and fans around the world. The legacy of Dodo Mayana will live on in the hearts of those he inspired.
