Nigerian Wrestlers Shine at 2025 African Championships in Morocco

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has commended Nigerian wrestlers for their outstanding performance at the 2025 Senior Wrestling Championships in Morocco. Team Nigeria dominated the tournament, topping the medal table with an impressive haul of 10 gold medals, 1 silver, and 1 bronze.

The Nigerian female team secured their 14th overall championship title, winning nine gold medals. Meanwhile, the men’s team ended a four-year drought without a champion, with Steve Simon Izolo claiming gold and cementing Nigeria’s reputation as a wrestling powerhouse in Africa.

NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko praised the team for their remarkable achievement, assuring them that their efforts will be recognized and rewarded. “This is another display of the resilient power of our great country,” he said. “We are determined to ensure that all our athletes are well-motivated and rewarded under a sustainable sports ecosystem with a thriving economy.”

NSC Director-General Hon. Bukola Olopade also congratulated the athletes, crediting the success to the leadership of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, particularly President Daniel Igali. “The success we are recording in wrestling is not a fluke,” Olopade said. “The quality and profile of our president, Daniel Igali, who has continued to transform the sport with his passion, dedication, and international network, have been instrumental.”

Olopade expressed gratitude to the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Alhaji Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, for his financial and moral support, which contributed to the team’s success.
