FENCING TAKES CENTRE STAGE IN AFRICA

Fencing is a physically and mentally demanding sport with a rich history spanning over 4,000 years. Originating in ancient civilizations, such as Egypt and Greece, fencing was initially used as a form of self-defense and dueling. The modern version of fencing emerged in Europe in the 18th century, with the first official rules being published in 1776.
Fencing is known for its unique combination of physical skill, mental strategy, and personal growth. It requires agility, speed, and endurance, as well as tactical thinking and emotional control. Fencing is also recognized for its emphasis on etiquette, respect, and sportsmanship.

In Africa, fencing is a growing sport, with Egypt, South Africa, and Tunisia being among the top fencing nations. The African Fencing Confederation (AFC) is the governing body responsible for promoting the sport, organizing competitions, and developing fencing programs across the continent.
One notable fencing competition held in Africa was the 2018 African Fencing Championships, which took place in Cairo, Egypt. The championships featured top fencers from across the continent, competing in individual and team events.

In the men’s foil event, Egyptian fencer Alaaeldin Abouelkassem took home the gold medal, defeating his South African opponent, Juliana Barrett, in the final. The women’s epee event was won by Tunisian fencer Sarra Besbes, who edged out Egyptian fencer Yara El Sharkawy in a closely contested final.
Major competitions held in Africa include the African Fencing Championships, African Games, and Zone Fencing Championships.

Key terms to know include en garde (on guard), riposte (counterattack), piste (fencing strip), and valid target area (area on the opponent’s body where points can be scored). Fencing equipment includes a sword, mask, glove, lame, and fencing uniform.

Fencing improves cardiovascular fitness, agility, coordination, strategic thinking, focus, discipline, and self-control.
