ABEBE BIKILA: The Unstoppable Ethiopian Athlete Who Runs Barefoot

Africa has been described as a continent where legends are born; a foundation of champions with timeless triumphs and unforgettable feats. One of those classic moments in time was at the 1960 Rome Olympics where an Ethiopian Athlete won the marathon race barefoot while setting a new world record of 2:15:16. His name is Abebe Bikila.

Born in 1932 in the Shewa Province of Ethiopia, Bikila grew up in a poor farming family and had limited access to modern running shoes.

Bikila was a last-minute addition to the Ethiopian team at the 1960 Rome Olympics. He chose to run barefoot because he found the provided shoes uncomfortable. His victory was a historic moment, showcasing his talent and Ethiopia’s emergence as a force in distance running.

Bikila repeated his Olympic marathon victory at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, this time wearing shoes, and setting another new world record of 2:12:00.

Bikila’s remarkable achievement was not only due to his exceptional athletic ability but also his determination and resilience. His barefoot victory symbolized resilience, determination, and overcoming adversity. He inspired generations of Ethiopian and African athletes.

Bikila worked as a coach and promoter of sports development in Ethiopia where he offered some humanitarian services and gave back to the community.

Abebe Bikila’s legacy extends beyond his athletic achievements but sadly, his life was cut short due to a car accident in 1969, which left him paralyzed from the waist down. He passed away in 1973 at the age of 41.

Abebe Bikila’s remarkable story continues to inspire athletes in Ethiopia, Africa, and the entire universe.
